In 1910, Judge Heriot Clarkson established a summer escape in the Blue Ridge Mountains, naming it “Little Switzerland” because of the surrounding slopes’ resemblance to the Swiss Alps. The community that grew up around Clarkson’s resort took the name to heart — many of the buildings have incorporated Old World-style Swiss chalet architecture. More than 100 years later, Little Switzerland is an iconic stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway (at Milepost 334), where you’ll find delicious food, eclectic shopping, warm Southern hospitality and sweeping, uninterrupted mountain views.
This community is open for visitors late April through October. At 3,400 feet in elevation, the miles of mountain views showcase Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the eastern United States, and the Black Mountains, part of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Wander among unique shops to find books, souvenirs and locally crafted art and decor. Stop for smoked trout, prime rib, barbecue (along the NC BBQ Trail!), or order a cocktail and raise a glass to the sun setting over the mountains.
Outdoor Adventures Near Little Switzerland
There are terrific opportunities for exhilarating hikes (and photos)! Crabtree Falls, Grassy Creek Falls and Linville Falls are some of the prettiest multi-cascade waterfalls on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and all close to Little Switzerland.
Fro driving enthusiasts, there's more to explore than just the Blue Ridge Parkway. Another highlight of this area, especially if you’re a biker, is the Diamondback Motorcycle and Sportscar Route running through the dense Pisgah National Forest, opening up into Little Switzerland, which will be quite a nice break from the 12 miles of switchbacks and over 190 curves!
